Quote of the Week 2
Okay guys! This is the quote of the week, and it requires some background.
So, at my school, we have different buildings with many different classrooms in them. We also have 4 portables, which are exactly like trailers, which are near the fields for sports, or the grounds, or whatever you'd like to call them. Except these portables are just like classrooms on the inside. Unfortunately, when the weather gets unruly and harsh, the classes in the portables must move to other classrooms, and one day this week, we had to move to the Building 7 computer lab. Then, we had to go there again the next day, and when my civics teacher told us on Edmodo (a class discussion site), I replied "Again", and his resulting reply is now sitting below these words on my blog now.
"Yes, ask not what your portable can do for you, ask what you can do for your portable"
-Mr.Brad Busboom, 7th grade civics teacher

Why Turkey?- Thanksgiving Special
Thanksgiving. You just read this word, and in your mind popped up a family feast of mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, apple pie, and of course, a huge, juicy bird. Turkey, to be specific. (Unless you're someone who happens to think of Chinese food... trust me, I know some people...) But have you ever thought about why its always turkey? It kind of makes it a strange holiday, I mean, why not chicken? Don't you think it could be classified as a very strange holiday? Well, personally, no, because I happen to think of Easter as that, not because I have anything against the reason it is celebrated, but the idea of an oversized rabbit breaking into your house and promoting your dentist by leaving candy in... eggs!?... thats a post for another day, to make it short. As of now, we shall focus on Turkey Day, aka Thanksgiving, and why it is always a turkey incorporated in the meal.
Okay, now, lets address the question head on...why turkey? Nowadays they sell things like tofurkey, which is pretty cool to think about, but why turkey? Okay, so, we all know that the Pilgrims were thankful to the Native Americans (not Indians! This is an outrage, but again, a post for another day. I have enough ideas to keep you guys busy for a looong time.), but yeah, Native Americans helped them survive and despite the fact that they had wars, they still helped each other many a times, and so they all had feast one day, and there it was! Turkey! Yes, folks, listen to this! Answering to the question, "Was turkey a part of those meals?" (in which "those" refers to the first Thanksgiving), Andrew Smith, food historian, replied "All of the early evidence for those late 18th century meals [show] turkey was a part of those." They did eat it when they could get one, it was a common bird, therefore a common meal, back then, so it makes a lot of sense. Also according to Andrew, a food historian, turkey didn't become a core part of the Thanksgiving meal until about the late 19th century. By the way, the first, original Thanksgiving was in the late 18th century. So, yeah, unfortunately it's not that much of an interesting answer, you now now why its always turkey! To my friends who believe that Chinese food makes more sense, well, I do NOT know where that comes from, but I would like to wish all my readers a very happy Thanksgiving!
"THANKS" for reading, and don't forget to say thanks to everyone that deserves a thank you, especially your parents, siblings, family, teachers, and friends.

The Ironic Questions of Life
Okay, really, now, we must face the greater questions in life. Anyone got any suggestions for answers? Or any other creative questions?
Are there female leprechauns?
Do Siamese twins pay one or two tickets at the movies? Or a train?
Why do they call it your "bottom" when it's in the middle of your body?
If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?
and, last but not least,
Why cant naturalized citizens with clean records run for president of the United States?

Why Gryffindor Is the Best Hogwarts House
Alright, alright, call me stereotypical, but today I'm here to prove that Gryffindor is the best House, and perhaps they are reckless sometimes, but, we NEED a little excitement, and hey! Harry's
in it! So watch out, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and even Hufflepuff! Gryffindor rules!
in it! So watch out, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and even Hufflepuff! Gryffindor rules!
Okay, so let me introduce Gryffindor to you all. Godric Gryffindor was their founder, and this guy, is totally amazing! Listen to this quote, about Godric Gryffindor by none other than the Sorting Hat itself.
"Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head The founders put some brains in me So I could choose instead!''" —The Sorting Hat on how Professor Gryffindor decided to use him to Sort
Gryffindors are known for being the bravest Hogwarts House. Genuine, true, and daring, down to the very core, what more could you ask for? This is my true opinion of Gryffindor, and you may not believe so, since I feel so strongly for Hufflepuff, but I really truly think that Gryffindors are out of this world! Even the problems with Gryffindor are related to their good qualities. For example, one is that Gryffindors really would die for something they care about. For example, I found an article on the Internet with the author describing her experience and how she knows she really is a Gryffindor. Here it is, in the author's words. "Funny story: I once participated in a theatre workshop where the instructor had given us this really cool exercise—she would give a group of six or seven of us a word, and we had 10 seconds to work out a tableau that imparted that word to the audience. My group was given “Protect.” We only had enough time to decide who in the group would be protected before she called on us to create the tableau. We assembled the picture and froze. “Well,” she said, in a very Professor McGonagall-y sort of way, “isn’t that interesting.” Using my peripheral vision, I could just make out the scene we had formed. Every other person in the group was working to corral the person who needed protecting away from harm, leading her to some safe haven. But I (alone) had flung myself in front of her, feet planted, arms spread wide to fend off whatever was coming."
"Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
And so, Gryffindor's hat was the Sorting Hat. Also, Gryffindor was, according to Harry Potter Wiki, was "the most in favor of allowing Muggle-borns into the school." This proves he was a very kind person who believed in fairness, and not just a proud warrior. Also from Harry Potter Wiki, "Gryffindor left two known relics: a goblin-made sword, adorned with rubies, and the Sorting Hat. The two items share a particular bond; whenever a "true Gryffindor" needs it, the Sword will let itself be pulled out of the hat."
Godric Gryffindor |
JK Rowling |
Anyway, JK Rowling is a Gryffindor herself, she says. And so is Harry Potter! And Hermione, and Ron, and all the Weasleys! And you just can't have anything against the House with Fred and George in it, those hilarious tricksters! Harry Potter has all the characteristics of the ideal Gryffindor, I'd say. He is daring, brave, and his love is enough to make him risk his own life for those that he cares about. He is an amazing character, created and introduced and developed personality to perfection.
But how could I ever forget about Dumbledore? He is the opposite of reckless, as most Gryffindors are thought to be. He could keep a secret (through most of his life and through all of the Harry Potter books, but I wont give it away), he was trustworthy, and always on the right side of the argument. One of his many quotes: "Ofcourse it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on Earth should that mean that it is not real?". I particularly like that one. It reminds me of a song called Dreams Don't Turn to Dust. But Dumbledore is always "the wise one, the sensible one", and people forget that he can have a sense of adventure too. There...are some things here that I could say about him, but they would be spoilers, so I have decided to not include that.
In conclusion, I believe that Gryffindor is one of the greatest Houses, perhaps even of the best beginnings, and well, what else can I say? Go Gryffindor!!!

Why Hufflepuff Is the Best Hogwarts House
Okay, Gryffindors, Slytherins, and Ravenclaws, take a deep breath and face the music. HUFFLEPUFF really ROCKS. (If you are too cowardly to admit this, then go ahead and read the other essays, like the one which proves you House is the best. Not expecting this, Gryffindors!) Now, you dont have to believe that Hufflepuff is the best Hogwarts House, just at least read this before you stabilize your opinion of Hufflepuff, whatever it may be. And maybe I'll change it! Just read it through, all right?
I'll admit that I am a "little" partial to Hufflepuff, perhaps because I happen to be one. Here's the saying for Hufflepuff. "Those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil" The founder was Helga Hufflepuff. Here's a picture of her, if you don't know her. Now, back to the saying. I am very disappointed to say that even some of my closest friends think that Hufflepuffs are stupid people unable to apply themselves that are loyal and follow-the-leader, manual working types. No, no, no, no, nooooo!!! Please, I beg of you, listen! Now, here's an info overload, all very TRUE, I got it from a trustworthy source and JK Rowling herself wrote it, and it proves that Hufflepuff is not the least clever House. Three successful former Hufflepuff Ministers of Magic- Grogan Stump, Dugald McPhail, and Artemesia Lufkin. The WORLD AUTHORITY on magical creatures Newt Scamander; Bridget Wenlock, the famous thirteenth-century Arithmancer who first discovered the magical properties of the number 7, and Hengist of Woodcroft, who founded the village of Hogsmeade, which lies very near Hogwarts school. Hufflepuffs all. (Oh, and me. Cant forget me!!!)
***Also, I am very proud to say, that in the Battle of Hogwarts, every House had to choose to either stay and fight for Hogwarts, or not to. Ravenclaws, some stayed, some didn't. Slytherins, for their own reasons, did not stay. All the Hufflepuffs, every single one, stayed, along with the Gryffindors. But here's the difference: Gryffindors can be reckless. They also are very dramatic, and want fame. Even JK Rowling says so. But the Hufflepuffs didn't stay in haste, or for fame, or to be known as very loyal and heroic. They stayed for better reasons. And also, JK Rowling says very clearly that her favorite House is Hufflepuff, and explains why in this video. (Click this).
Now, there is someone awesome from every House in the Harry Potter series, or at least someone with a big role. Luna's got Ravenclaw covered. Harry's got Gryffindor. Draco's got Slytherin. But what about Hufflepuff??? Apparently nobody remembers Cedric Diggory! He is supposed to be the whole point! I mean, I have nothing against Harry, Harry is amazing and awesome and handsome and funny and just plain FABULOUS. He's definitely one of my favorite characters. But what about CEDRIC? "Oh. He died, and Harry beat him in the tournament, right?" What? That is not fair!
Cedric was a very fierce friend, ever fair and loyal, and never, ever, ever cheating. He was a pure Hufflepuff, just, honest, hardworking and fair. Even Dumbledore said so. But was he dumb? No! Was he scared? Certainly not! Maybe not as flashy as Gryffindor swagger, but definitely more admirable. He and Harry would have both achieved first place in the Triwizard Tournament had the incident with Voldemort not happened. (Sorry about the spoiler!) During the third task of the Triwizard tournament, Harry and Cedric went through a maze. Harry and Cedric both worked together to fight the things in the maze, and since Harry saved Cedric during this time, Cedric told Harry that they should both grab the Cup at the same time. He had the chance to get it and win fame, and glory, and so much more. He could have had it all, and been the one to beat "The Boy Who Lived". But he didn't. He showed bravery, control, fairness, and honesty. This is a Hufflepuff, and what it means to be one. Sweet and slow, like molasses, people think. Think again.
By the way, Tonks was a Hufflepuff. She gave birth and then turned around 11 days later to fight the Dark Lord. So, yeah.
